Julian Thiele is Chair of Organic Chemistry at OVGU Magdeburg and group leader at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden. He received his BSc from Lund University, and his diploma in Chemistry from Hamburg University in 2008. He joined the group of D. A. Weitz at Harvard University, and graduated from Bayreuth University in the group of Stephan Förster in 2011, for which he was awarded the Culture Award Bavaria. As a Feodor-Lynen fellow of the Humboldt Foundation, he worked with Wilhelm T. S. Huck at Radboud University Nijmegen before joining the TU Dresden (PI G. Cuniberti) from 2014 to 2015. His research interest focuses on utilizing high-resolution additive manufacturing and droplet microfluidics to process macromolecular precursors into active soft matter and biomaterials that are adaptive and responsive. He is also co-founder and now leader of the Leibniz Application Laboratory “Additive Manufacturing / 3D printing”. In April 2020, Julian Thiele started his ERC StG project „3DPartForm“ to develop hierarchical polymer materials by novel additive manufacturing techniques that are able to guide, process and manipulate physicochemical information. Since June 2020, he is a member of the Young Academy of Europe, focusing on transdisciplinary research. His research on macromolecular material design for cell-free drug synthesis was recognized by the Georg Manecke Prize 2019 (GDCh).
